The Van Horn Falcons volleyball team held off the University Gryphons in the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-22, before sweeping the best-of-five match with a 25-18 win in set three, taking the match 3-0.

Tuesday, October 4, 2022 Boys Soccer Van Horn Falcons 2, Guadalupe Centers Aztecs 1

The Van Horn Falcons boys soccer team had three good scoring chances in the first half of their game against the Guadalupe Centers Aztecs at the Van Horn Soccer/Football Stadium, but Luis Popoca was equal to the task on every opportunity.

In the 46th minute Adrian Flores headed a perfect corner kick feed from Cooper Sumpter home to give the Falcons a 1-0.

close in goal from Jhonny De La Rosa in the 51st minute gave the Falcons a 2-0 edge.

Late in the second half Steven Aguayo of the Aztecs broke Levi Carter’s shutout, but Van Horn held on for a 2-1 win.

The St. Joseph Central Indians controlled their volleyball match with the William Chrisman Bears, winning three-sets-to-none in St. Joseph.

Friday, October 1, 2022 Football William Chrisman Bears 30, Winnetonka Griffins 14

The William Chrisman Bears football team went 65 yards in two plays, taking 18 seconds off the clock, in their first drive to grab a 7-0 lead over the Winnetonka Griffins at Independence All-School Stadium.

Anthony Miller accounted for all of the Bears yards.

Winnetonka got on the board with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter when William Chrisman quarterback Connor Elliott was flagged for grounding in the endzone, giving the Griffins a safety and cutting the Bears lead to 7-2.

The free kick after the safety was returned 86 yards by Jonathan Merwin of the Griffins, giving Winnetonka an 8-7 advantage.

William Chrisman came right back and a 30-yard field goal by Mitchell Cory gave the Bears a 10-8 lead they would never relinquish.

In the second half, the Bears increased their lead to 30-8 on a 55-yard fumble return for a score by Lance Nauer with 1:49 to go in the third quarter, a 33-yard touchdown run by Miller with 9:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, and a tremendous catch in the endzone of a 14-yard pass by Nick Terrell from Elliott with 6:11 to go in the game.

The Griffins only offensive score occurred on a 14-yard pass from Dean DeJesus to Merwin with 3:59 left in the fourth quarter, making the final score 30-14 Bears.

After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer in regulation time, and two ten-minute overtimes with no scores, the Van Horn Falcons boys soccer team out-dueled the Truman Patriots in penalty kicks to take a 1-0 win.

For the first time in ten years the William Chrisman volleyball team defeated the Patriots (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23) at Truman.

Monday, September 26, 2022 Softball Truman Patriots 15, William Chrisman Bears 7

The Truman Patriots scored four first-inning runs, one in the second, two in the third, and four more in the fifth to take an 11-0 lead forcing the William Chrisman Bears to score at least two runs in the bottom of the fifth to avoid a mercy rule five-inning loss.

The Bears extended the game to sixth by scoring three runs in the bottom of inning five.

The Patriots scored four in the top of the sixth, making the score 15-3 Truman, only to have William Chrisman plate three in the bottom of the sixth to make it a seven-inning game.

William Chrisman scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but never got closer as Truman won 15-7 at William Chrisman.

Mattie Sharp pitched six and two-thirds to get the win.

Senior Erynn Boatright went four-for-five with a grand slam and two doubles to lead the Patriots offense.

Also going four-for-five with three singles and a double or Truman was Ce Ce Mora.

Aariana Paprocki led the Bears with a three-for-four afternoon with a walk.

Friday, September 23, 2022 Football Belton Pirates 52, William Chrisman Bears 7

Down 24-0 with 6:07 remaining in the second quarter, the William Chrisman Bears never recovered as they fell to the Belton Pirates 52-7.

With 2:49 left in the first half, the Bears pulled to within 17 when Mitchell scored on a one-yard run, and kicked the extra point, cutting the Belton the advantage to 24-7, but the Pirates came back with an interception and a fumble returned for touchdowns and went into halftime with a 38-7 lead.

Belton scored two more touchdowns in the second half to make the final score 52-7 Pirates.

Anthony Miller rushed 14 times for 65 yards for the Bears. Jamir Robinson-Smith caught six passes for 70 yards and freshman quarterback Connor Elliott completed seven of 14 passes for 78 yards.

Javon Minor rushed 78 times for 146 yards and a touchdown for the Pirates.

Friday, September 23, 2022 Football Richmond Spartans 23, Van Horn Falcons 7

In a matchup of 3-0 teams, the Spartans handed the Van Horn Falcons their first loss of the season, 18-7, in Richmond.

In their first offensive drive, Richmond went 84 yards on 12 plays, taking 4:47 off the clock as Aidan Ivison went over from one yard out. The extra point kick was no good and the Spartans held onto their 6-0 lead until Christian Webb scored on a 27-yard run with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter to put Richmond up 12-0.

The lone Falcons score came with 6:15 to go in the second quarter when Da’Marcus Penson caught a 7-yard pass from junior quarterback Andrew Murphy and Levi Carter kicked the extra point, cutting the Falcons deficit to 12-7.

Late in the fourth quarter, Van Horn was inside the Spartans 20, but an interception by Ballon Stockton was returned for a touchdown, making the final score Richmond 18, Van Horn 7.

Friday, September 23, 2022 Bonus Softball Broadcast Willard Tigers 5, Park Hill Trojans 1 Park Hill South Tournament

The Willard Tigers and Park Hill Trojans each scored a run in the first inning and the score remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning when Willard pushed across four runs to take a 5-1 lead, as they went on to win by that score.

Hannah Burks led the Tigers offense as she went three-for-four at the plate with a single, a double, and a three-run homerun after two were out in the top of the fifth inning.

Senior Abby McMillin pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, striking out three, and allowing one walk.

Sophomore Harley Durr reached base in all of her plate appearances, being hit by a pitch twice and receiving a walk.

Thursday, September 15, 2022 Softball at Macken Park William Chrisman Bears 13, North Kansas City Hornets 6

The William Chrisman Bears scored three second-inning runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead over the North Kansas City Hornets at Macken Park, only to have the Hornets tie the game at 4-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The big blow for the Bears in the third was a three-run homerun from freshman June Johnson.

In the top of the fourth, the Bears went back up when junior Isabelle Dufva hit a three-run homer after two were out.

In the top of the sixth, the Bears blew the game open when they scored six runs on four hits and were aided by a Hornet walk and an error.

NKC added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bears held on for a 13-6 win.

Sophomore Skylar Dufva went the distance for the Bears, allowing five hits and three walks, while striking out six.

Izabella Dufva went two-for-four, with two walks and Aariana Paprocki went two-for-four with a walk for the Bears.

The Bears record went to 5-8 with the win.

In the bottom of that inning, the Hornets scored a run to shorten their deficit to 7-5.

Wednesday, September 14, 2022 College Volleyball Cowley College 3, KCKCC 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-14)

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils led much of their first set against the 11-0 Cowley County Community College Tigers at the KCKCC Field House but fell in the first set 25-22.

It was all Tigers in the next two sets, 25-15, 25-14 as Cowley County improved their record to 12-0.

Tuesday, September 13, 2022 Softball Truman 7, St. Joseph Central 4

Trailing 3-0, with just one hit after four innings, the Truman Patriots scored two runs a Central error, a Hope Albert single and a walk to Addie Masters scored two runs to cut the Indians lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning.

Central got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff triple from Trendy Millikin and a single from Zoe Trotter.

In the top of the sixth inning the Patriots scored five runs after two were out to go up 7-4. Truman got five hits and were helped by a Central error in the frame. Kailyn Albiar, Albert and Masters had singles while Erynn Boatright and Addie Sutton delivered doubles.

There was no more scoring and the Patriots defeated the Indians 7-4.

Mattie Sharp, who pitched the first four innings and the sixth got the win allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one, and walking two. The save went to Albiar who pitched the fifth and seventh innings one run on two hits, striking out two and walking one.

Makenzie Garr took the loss, pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits, striking out six and walking two.

Hope Albert went two-for-three for the Patriots with a pair of singles and Boatright turned in three outstanding fielding plays.

Friday, September 9, 2022 Football Van Horn Falcons 17, William Chrisman Bears 3

In a matchup of two ISD 2-0 football teams, the Van Horn Falcons prevailed 17-3 over the William Chrisman in their Homecoming Game.

On the Falcons first drive they went 80 yards in ten plays, taking 7:03 off the clock as Da’Marcus Penson caught a ten-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Murphy to go up 7-0.

That score remained until the final play of the second quarter when Levi Carter kicked a 20-yard field goal to increase the Van Horn advantage to 10-0.

On the third quarter kickoff, the Falcons did not pick the ball up on the one-yard line allowing the Bears to open the second half with a first-and-goal. The Van Horn defense kept William Chrisman out of the endzone and the Bears settled for a 26-yard field goal by Mitchell Cory.

The final score of the game was a four-yard run by Van Horn’s Car’Delle Randolph with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter, making the final score 17-3 Van Horn.

Randolph rushed for 92 yards in 17 carries.

At halftime senior Sanoma Hunter was proclaimed Homecoming Queen and Penson Homecoming King.

An evenly matched game between two ISD rivals at Independence All Schools Stadium. Both goalies blocked a lot of shots from the opposing team. In the 69th minute, Cisneros of William Chrisman was fouled in the box. He was then given a penalty kick which he made making the score 1-0 and that was how the game ended with William Chrisman taking the win on their home field.

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 College Volleyball Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils 3, Coffeyville Community College Ravens 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15)

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils volleyball team evened their Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference record at 1-1, improved their overall record to 7-2 and moved their home record to 3-0 with a three-sets-to-none triumph over the Coffeyville Community College Ravens 25-17, 25-17, 25-15.

Friday, September 2, 2022 Football Van Horn Falcons 47, Northeast Vikings 0

Van Horn was denied the end zone on their first possession and led Northeast by the score of just 7-0 after one quarter. However, with the help of some miscues by the Northeast special teams unit the Falcons soared in the second quarter. In that second quarter, Van Horn took advantage of great field position and put 34 points on the board and led 41-0 at halftime. Van Horn would score once more in the third quarter and they go home with the win 47-0 win–

Friday, September 2, 2022 Football The 52nd Annual Wagon Wheel Game William Chrisman Bears, Truman Patriots 7

The 52nd Wagon Wheel game between the Truman Patriots and William Chrisman Bears got off to a hot start at Independence All-Schools Stadium. Robinson-Smith of the Bears received the opening kickoff and took it 85 yards to the house to put the Bears ahead 6-0 (Cory missed XP). The Patriots then got the ball and started their offensive series behind their senior quarterback Chapin. The William Chrisman Bears made it a short offensive series stopping the Patriots and forcing them to punt. Mitchell Cory, the do-it-all man for the Bears, sets up for a field goal and a fumbled snap made his holder take off running and he was brought down by Michael Larry Jr of the Patriots. Cory will get his redemption at the field goal later in the first because the snap, hold, and kick were all good and the score at the end of 1st quarter was 9-0 in favor of the William Chrisman Bears. Then Anthony Miller scored a touchdown, Cory’s XP was good. That was followed up by Cory then hits Nick Terrell for another touchdown and Cory runs in the 2 point conversion. Your score at the end of the 1st half was 24-0 William Chrisman with a commanding lead. Miller then gets another touchdown rush early in the 3rd quarter, (Cory XP was good). 31-0 is the new score. Then it was a back and forth battle the rest of the 3rd quarter. Cory hits an early field in the 4th quarter making it 34-0. Then Coach Rose-Ivey brings in his second team led by Connor Elliot at quarterback, who then hands the ball off to Javerion Jeffries who cuts back across the field twice to score a touchdown. (Cory XP was good). 41-0 is the new score. The Patriots continued to battle all gain and they marched down the field to score their only touchdown of the game on a pass from Chapin to Larry Jr. (Julian Saak XP was good). Then the Bears got the ball back and just kept running the ball to keep the clock running. Your final score was William Chrisman Bears 41 – Truman Patriots 7. The Bears then won the 52nd Wagon Wheel game at Independence All-School Stadiums. William Chrisman advances to 2-0 on the year and the Patriots fall to 0-2 on the year. Next week the Bears travel to Van Horn to play the Falcons another Independence School District foe, Bob Rennision and Dick Krawczyk of Free Tap will be on the call. The Patriots will then play the first home game as they will play the Southeast Knights, Robbie and Kimberly Pierson of Free Tap will be on the call.

Thursday, September 1, 2022 Volleyball Truman Patriots 3, Van Horn Falcons 1 (25-17, 25-15, 25-27)

After falling in the first to sets in a best-of-five, against the Truman Patriots (25-15, 25-15), the Van Horn Falcons defeate the Pats 27-25 in the third set.

Truman overcame a 24-20 deficit to tie the set 25-25 and send the match to overtime. The Falcons got two overtime kills by senior Sanoma Hunter, after serves from junior Macey Berlin to win the set 27-25.

The Patriots were not to be denied in set four as they opened with an 8-1 run en route to a 25-12 victory in the set as they took the match three-sets-to-one.

Thursday, September 1, 2022, Softball Lee’s Summit West Titans 9, Truman Patriots 1

In the first inning of this game at Truman, the defending Class 5 State Champion Titans first three batters came around to score in the first inning giving Lee’s Summit West a 3-0 lead after half an inning.

The score remained 3-0 Titans until Ce Ce Mora’s two-out triple in the bottom of the third brought home, Addie Sutton, cutting the Patriots deficit to 3-1.

That’s all Truman would get as the Titans scored a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take a 9-1 win.

Ella Cox went the distance for the Titans win, allowing six hits walking none, and striking out one.

Sutton and Savannah Schnell each had two hits for the Patriots.

Kailey Colman went three-for-three with a walk, Addy Waits went three-for-four and was hit by a pitch and Bailey Amezcua was three-for-four, with two doubles for Lee’s Summit West in their victory.

Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Volleyball William Chrisman Bears 3, Van Horn Falcons 0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-22)

The William Chrisman Bears and Van Horn Falcons volleyball teams entered their game at The Bear Den with 1-1 records as the Falcons played the first of two consecutive matches at opposing ISD schools.

After falling in the first two sets 25-16, and 25-6, the Falcons played a strong third set, but fell to the Bears 25-22, losing the best-of-five match in straight sets.

Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Softball Excelsior Springs at William Chrisman Excelsior Springs Tigers 12, William Chrisman Bears 8 9 innings.

First game in the new William Chrisman Softball Complex.

A one-out single by Chloe Carlyle of the Excelsior Springs Tigers was the first hit in the new softball complex at William Chrisman as the visitors scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Bears came back with two runs on three hit and a hit batter to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Aariana Paprocki got the Bears first hit, a single at the new facility.

In the second inning the Tigers got four runs on four hits, two errors, a hit batter and a walk, to go up 5-2.

With one out in the bottom of the third, back-to-back doubles by junior Isabelle Dufva and senior Kiara Boldridge pulled the Bears a little closer at 5-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, after Bri Wyenandt reached with a single, Boldridge hit a home run over the left field fence to mark the first round-tripper in the new complex and tied the game 5-5.

The Tigers pushed across a run in the top of the sixth and the score remained 6-5 Excelsior Springs in the bottom of the seventh when two-out steam of home by Isabelle Dufva tied the game sending it to extral innings.

Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the eigth, a one-out single from sophomore Rosie Solomon scored scored Adriana Rakestraw, who had been hit by a pitch, to tie the game at 7 and force a ninth inning.

After giving up five runs in the ninth inning the Bears managed only one run in the bottom of the frame as Clarissa Etter’s two out single drove home Isabelle Dufva to pull the Bears to within four, but freshman Keira Romazon, who had come on in the eight, got the victory for the Tigers as they defeated the William Chrisman Bears 12-8 in nine innings.

Monday, August 29, 2022, Softball Truman Patriots 6, Pleasant Hill Chicks 3 First Game at New Truman Softball Complex

In the first game at the new Truman High School Softball Complex, after a 40-minute lightning delay, the Pleasant Hill Chicks scored a first-inning run without the benefit of a hit to take a 1-0 lead over the Patriots.

When the Patriots came to bat in the bottom of the first Addison Masters led off with a single…the first hit in the new complex. One out later, Truman senior Ce Ce Mora blasted the first home run over the left-centerfield fence for the first round-tripper in the new facility to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the third, the Chicks went up 3-2 when Brooke Shifflett blasted a two-run home.

Mora led off the bottom of that inning with her second home run of the game to tie the score at 3-3.

With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Truman sent nine batters to the plate as they scored three runs to take a 6-3 advantage. The big blow of the inning was a one-out triple from Erynn Boatright that scored Mora who had been walked for the first of two times.

There was no scoring the rest of the way and the Patriots won the first game in their new facility, 6-3.

Sophomore Mattie Sharp went the distance to get the win, allowing six hits, striking out seven and walking two.

Raytown South Cardinals 46, Truman Patriots 27

A battle of two teams looking to snap their losing streaks that go back to 2019 went down in Raytown, last night. Your Truman Patriots took on the Raytown South Cardinals. The Cardinals got the ball first and on the first play of the drive had a high snap which Kenyon Johnson jumped on giving the Patriot offense great field position. Then a handoff to Freddie Sheppard made it 7-0. The Cardinals then marched back down the field and scored but missed the 2 point conversion making it 7-6. Both teams then scored on their next offensive series. Truman missed the extra point, and Raytown South couldn’t convert the 2 point conversion as we ended a 53 minute 1st quarter 13-12 Truman. Then in the second quarter the game was controlled by Raytown South as they scored 28 unanswered points. In the last 40 seconds of the 2nd quarter Senior John Chapin led his team down the field and the Patriots scored a touchdown and the extra point with a Julian Saak kick. Going into halftime it was 40-20 in favor of the Cardinals. The Patriots received the opening kickoff of the second half and were unable to get the ball moving. The Patriots defense showed up in the 2nd half only allowing 6 points to the Cardinal offense. They also had several goal line stands where they stopped the Cardinals. The Patriots scored once more in the 3rd quarter and no team scored in the 4th. The final from Raytown South, Cardinals 46 – Patriots 27. The Patriots fell to 0-1 to start the season. Next week the Patriots will travel north on Noland Road to face crosstown rivals the William Chrisman Bears (1-0) in the Wagon Wheel game. Robbie Pierson and Bob Rennison will be on the call for that game.

Van Horn Falcons 53, East Bears 8

In game one of the 2022 high school football season, the Van Horn Falcons scored early and often against the East Bears.

After the opening kickoff, it took Van Horn just two plays to grab their first lead of the season. They also scored on their second possession to go up 13-0.

At that point, the Falcons never looked back, and behind a stellar defense, they sent the Van Horn faithful home happy from the east side of Kansas City.

It was a very impressive week one outing against the Bears as the Falcons put up a total of eight offensive touchdowns including scores from DeMarcus Pinson, Derias Horton, Demetrius Wilson, CarDelle Randolph, and Sammie Bailey.

Van Horn won easily 53-8.

Friday, August 26, 2022, Football William Chrisman Bears 21, Grandview Bulldogs 14

With 7:16 remaining in the first quarter, Grandview running back KK Wright scored on a four-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead over William Chrisman.

The score remained 7-0 Canines until a 65-yard punt by Mitchell Cory pinned Grandview on their own two-yard line. Two plays later a high snap over the head of quarterback Joseph was recovered in the endzone by Bears senior defensive back Dayton Dockins in the endzone with 1:27 remaining in the first half, tying the game 7-7.

The Bears opened the second half with two 80-yard touchdown drives (eight plays and five plays), sandwiched around a Bulldogs 80-yard scoring drive, to go up 21-14.

Cory his Nick Terrell with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 5:44 to go in the third quarter and Anthony Milller II ran 30-yards for a score on the with 9:47 remaining in the fourth quater to regain the Bears advantage at 21-7.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs tied the game 14-all on Wright’s 1-yard plunge.

For the Bears, Miller carried 17 times for 139 yards, Nathan Cole had 96 yards in 14 rushes and Lance Naur 44 yards on four running plays.

Cory completed seven of 11 passes for 69 yards and kicked three extra points.

Ethan Dias and Antonio Graham each and an interception for the Bears.
